Rush Limbaugh, the electronic media’s most prominent conservative personality has stated time and again that if the GOP fails to nominate a “genuine” conservative a Democrat will surely be elected in November. The problem that faces the GOP, and Reaganites in particular, is who defines the term “conservative”.

Last Friday, Human Events endorsed the candidacy of former Sen. Fred Thompson. It is true that Fred Thompson has a strong conservative bona fides. However, he does not have an exemplary record on the spending side of the fiscal equation. Sen. John McCain has a great record including having served with and fought Congressional battles in support of President Reagan. McCain has a fiscal record that soars above his competitors, yet did not support the Bush tax cuts because of deficit concerns. He also is saddled with his support of President Bush’s immigration policy. Each candidate that has some claim to the title “Reagan conservative” has policy baggage.

The problem faced by these candidates, and the GOP, is what happens after the nomination. How will conservative voters react if “their” guy fails to win? Will they remember what Limbaugh and similar pundits said in December and January and stay home?
